More than 15 years of experience

Self-employment, rental income, and multi-source returns handled correctly the first time.

What to bring, and the key dates

  • Income slips: T4, T4A, T5, T3 and any others you received.
  • Deduction receipts: RRSP, tuition (T2202), medical, donations and childcare.
  • If you are self-employed: a summary of business income and expenses for the year.
  • If you have rental property: rent received, expenses, property tax and mortgage interest.
  • Last year's Notice of Assessment, if you have it.
  • Dates: most people must file by April 30. If you or your spouse or common-law partner is self-employed, the filing deadline is June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30.

Benefits such as the Canada Child Benefit and the GST/HST credit are based on the return you file. CRA has a child and family benefits calculator if you want a rough idea of what you might receive. Dates change from time to time, so confirm them on the CRA website.

If you file late

WhatRateHow it works
Late-filing penalty (first time)5% of the balance owing, plus 1% for each full month lateUp to 12 months, so up to 17% in total. Applies only if you owe tax.
Late-filing penalty (repeat)10% of the balance owing, plus 2% for each full month lateUp to 20 months, so up to 50% in total. Applies if you were charged a late-filing penalty in any of the three previous years.
Interest on unpaid tax7% a year (October to December 2026)Compounded daily from May 1, and reset every quarter. Also charged on unpaid penalties.

Even if you cannot pay, file on time. The late-filing penalty is charged on the balance owing, so filing late makes a bill bigger.

Frequently asked questions

When is my personal tax return due?

April 30 for most people. If you or your spouse or common-law partner is self-employed, the filing deadline is June 15, but any balance owing is still due April 30. When a deadline falls on a weekend, it moves to the next business day.

I'm self-employed. What do I need?

A summary of your business income and expenses for the year, plus your usual slips and receipts. If you do not have organized records, we can help with that too, through our bookkeeping service.

Can you file returns I missed in earlier years?

Yes. Tell us which years are missing and we will prepare them, and let you know what to expect from CRA.

Will I get a bigger refund with you?

Every return is different, and we cannot promise a result. What we do promise is to go through the deductions and credits you may be entitled to and to file an accurate return.

I don't live in Windsor. Does that matter?

No. We meet clients in person across Windsor, Essex County and Southern Ontario, and many clients simply send their documents by email or WhatsApp and review the return with us over a call.

What happens if I file my personal return late?

If you owe tax, CRA charges 5% of the balance plus 1% for each full month late, up to 12 months (17% maximum). If you were penalized in one of the last three years it doubles to 10% plus 2% a month, up to 50%. Interest is 7% a year (October to December 2026), compounded daily.
